Meet the Team

Headcoach: Amin Sharifi

Amin has studied martial arts since the 1990s, inspired by taekwondo, kung fu and his brother’s competitive success. His journey truly began with Muay Thai, and he’s been practising and competing ever since. As head coach, he brings expertise across multiple disciplines—including boxing, wrestling, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and karate—ensuring comprehensive MMA instruction.

Over the years Amin has taught both children and adults at many martial arts and fitness institutions in the Middle East, and this wide experience range gives him a lot of experience which he is keen to impart on his students.

A competitive fighter himself, Amin has achieved notable victories in taekwondo, and more recently has fought competitively in muay thai, MMA, boxing and kickboxing. He is looking forward to continuing to learn and achieve greater heights as a coach and pads holder. Amin has now achieved his lifelong ambition to open his very own gym here in Cambridge!

One of the standout areas of development for Coach Amin is his work as a pads trainer. He was the official coach of MMA fighter Amit Thapa for his SFL fights and entrance to the UFC, and also put Mounir “Sniper” Lazzez through his paces on the way to achieving victory in Desert Force, Phoenix 4 and Brave 16 and UFC . Amin has also supported MMA fighters Mehdi Ramazani and Anas Siraj Mounir in preparing for their fights.

Muay thai Coach: Ka Yan “Purcell“  Tong

Originally from Hong Kong, Coach Purcell is a highly accomplished Muay Thai athlete and dedicated coach with a passion that’s shaped her life since 2005. What began as a hobby quickly evolved into a fierce commitment to the art of Muay Thai, leading her to begin coaching in 2012 and competing internationally in 2014.

With an impressive fight record of 18 wins, 6 losses, and 2 draws—including 2 wins by TKO—Purcell has earned titles such as IPCC World Champion, PK-1 International Champion, and Thailand Patong Champion. She has showcased her skills in Hong Kong, Thailand, and China, competing in the bantamweight division with grit and determination.

Beyond the ring, she is a certified WBC Muaythai Referee and Judge and currently serves as the Head Coach for Thailand KMA Muaythai & Muayboran (Khan 11). Her deep knowledge, technical expertise, and inspiring journey make her a powerful role model and an exceptional guide for students of all levels.

Whether you’re just starting out or aiming to level up your skills, Coach Purcell brings world-class experience, discipline, and heart to every session.

Assistant Coach: Eugene

Eugene began his Muay Thai journey in 2010, and it has since become a lifelong passion that has taken him to train in Thailand, Japan, and Poland. His international experience has shaped a well-rounded and technical approach to the sport. At AMA, Eugene leads our fundamentals class, focusing on helping beginners build solid technique and confidence through structured, progressive training. With a professional background in engineering, he brings precision, patience, and an analytical mindset to his coaching—ensuring that each student learns safely, effectively, and with enjoyment.

Assistant Coach: Henry Gourlay

Born and raised in Cambridge, Henry first joined AMA in late 2023 following a friend’s recommendation. Despite recovering from a serious back injury at the time, he committed fully to his training—transforming from barely being able to kick above thigh height to making rapid progress across multiple disciplines.

Henry now trains in Muay Thai, kickboxing, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, while actively teaching Muay Thai and kickboxing. Still early in his journey, he continues to learn while he coaches, with a long-term goal of competing in Muay Thai, BJJ, and MMA. His dedication and resilience make him a relatable and motivating presence for both new and experienced students.
